Why I No Longer Set New Year's Resolutions

There’s a reason why jokes and memes about packed gyms in January and empty ones by February hit so close to home. New Year’s resolutions SUCK. 🚫✨

There, I said it.

New Year’s resolutions set us up to fail.

Why?

Because they’re often made without truly thinking them through. Resolutions are typically set during the holiday season—a time filled with emotions, indulgences, family, friends, and chaos. 🎄🎉 During this whirlwind, your regular routines—like sleep, eating, and working—are out the window. 🎤⏳ Any resolutions you create in this state aren’t based on the reality of your day-to-day life, so while they might start strong, they often crumble as the “normal” stresses of life creep back in. 🚩

Even worse, resolutions tend to focus on specific outcomes, like “I’ll lose 20 pounds,” or “I’ll save $10,000.” These goals are often isolated from the rest of your life and set with the expectation of quick results. But life is messy, interconnected, and unpredictable. 🤷‍♀️ When progress is slow or setbacks happen, frustration sets in, followed by disappointment and a sense of failure. 😔 Before long, the resolution is abandoned, leaving you feeling worse than when you started. 💥

I know this cycle all too well—because I’ve been there.

But when I ditched resolutions and started choosing a word for the year instead, everything changed. My life shifted, not because I set another goal but because I embraced a mindset that allowed for growth, flexibility, and grace. 🌟

The Power of a Word

In 2019, I chose my first word for the year: BE. At first, it felt like an unusual choice, but that word became my mantra and transformed my life. Here’s what BE taught me:

  • The ability to BE myself. 😊

  • The strength to BE authentic. ❤️

  • How to let life BE and flow naturally. 🌊

  • Allowing my healing to BE magical. 🌌

  • Learning to BE more present in my body and the moment. 🤍

By the end of 2019, I was amazed at how much I had grown simply by focusing on that one word. It wasn’t about achieving specific results but about living intentionally and allowing transformation to unfold. ✨

This year, my word was JOY, and while I’ve embraced it fully, I’ve realized that it’s not done with me yet. For 2025, JOY will return, joined by another word: CONNECTION.

These two words feel perfectly aligned with where I want to go next. I have an idea of how they will guide me, but I’m also excited to see the unexpected ways they will shape my year. The beauty of choosing a word is that it creates space for both intention and serendipity. 🌟

Why a Word Works

A word for the year is more than just a word; it’s an intention, a proclamation to the Universe that you are ready to welcome more of that energy into your life. It’s a mindset shift that unfolds over time. ✨

Unlike resolutions, a word is not about perfection or quick wins. It’s about growth, faith, and the surprises that come along the way. There’s no “failing” when you choose a word—there’s only learning and evolving. 🌈
